Couples Counselling in BC Online and in Coquitlam

35 years working with couples, individuals, and families who are ready for change. Online across British Columbia.

Most couples don't come to counselling because things are perfect. They come because the same argument keeps happening, one of you has gone quiet, or it feels like you're running a household together rather than being close.

Couples counselling gives you a steady, structured place to slow that down, understand what's really going on between you, and change it.

I'm Steven Keeler, a Registered Clinical Counsellor with 35 years of experience working with couples, men and families. Sessions are held online across BC, with occasional in-person appointments at my Coquitlam office.

Is couples counselling right for us?

It often helps when:

  • You keep having the same fight and can't get past it

  • Communication has become tense, defensive or shut down

  • Trust has been damaged, including after an affair

  • You're navigating a big transition: a new baby, a move, a career change, blended family, or retirement

  • You feel more like roommates than partners

  • One or both of you is wondering whether the relationship can be repaired

  • You want to strengthen a good relationship before problems build up

You don't both need to be certain the relationship will survive before you start. Many couples come in unsure, and clarity is often part of what they gain.

How we work together

My approach is relational.

I'm less interested in who's right than in the pattern the two of you get caught in, and how each of you contributes to it without meaning to.

In sessions, we will:

  • Name the cycle that keeps showing up between you

  • Help each of you be heard without it turning into a fight

  • Build practical skills for conflict, repair and connection

  • Work toward the changes you each want, whether that's rebuilding closeness or making a clear decision about the future

I work with all couples, including married, common-law, dating, same-sex, and those with children or blended families.

What we work on

Couples come to me with a range of presenting issues, but the underlying territory is usually the same: disconnection, patterns that repeat, and the feeling that the person across from you has become someone you can no longer reach. Specific areas include:

  • Rebuilding trust and emotional safety after betrayal or chronic conflict

  • Communication patterns that have hardened into walls

  • Intimacy and sexual disconnection

  • Parenting conflicts and co-parenting after separation

  • Anger that arrives before understanding — and the fallout it leaves

  • Life transitions that have destabilized the relationship

  • Couples where one or both partners carry unresolved trauma

What to expect

  1. Free consultation. A short call to talk about what's going on and whether I'm a good fit for you both.

  2. First sessions. We'll look at your history, what's working, and what you want to change. I may meet with you together and, at times, individually.

  3. Ongoing work. Weekly or every other week, depending on what you need. Many couples notice changes within a few sessions, though the pace varies.

"If your partner won't go to therapy, or has gone and checked out, that's not the end of the conversation. It's the beginning of a different one."

Common questions

Do we both need to attend?

Ideally yes, but if your partner isn't ready, we can talk about options. Starting on your own can still help.

Will you take sides?
No. My role is to support the relationship and both of you.

How many sessions will we need?
It depends on what brings you in. We'll review progress together and I'll be honest about how it's going.

Is what we say confidential?

Yes, within the legal limits of confidentiality in BC. I'll explain these clearly at the start.

Do you work with couples where one partner has served in the military or first responder service?

Yes.
